Main types of arc welding machines and their differences

Arc welding is a welding method that uses the high temperature generated by an electric arc to melt metal and thus achieve metal connection. Arc welding machines are the main equipment for arc welding. According to different welding methods and application scenarios, machines can be mainly divided into the following types:

1.SMAW

Features: Manual arc welding machines use a handheld welding gun to melt the welding rod and workpiece through an arc, which is suitable for welding a variety of metal materials. During the welding process, the coating of the welding rod provides shielding gas and slag to prevent oxidation of the welded metal.

Application: Widely used in fields such as construction, shipbuilding and maintenance, especially suitable for welding outdoors and in harsh environments.

2. GMAW/MIG

Features: Gas shielded arc welding machines use a continuously fed welding wire and use shielding gas (such as argon or carbon dioxide) to prevent oxidation. This welding method provides a more stable welding arc, faster welding speed and high weld quality.

Application: Commonly used in automobiles, light industry and manufacturing, suitable for welding thin plates.

3. Tungsten Inert Gas Welder (TIG)

Features: TIG uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode and an inert gas (usually argon) to protect the welding area. This method allows for high-precision welding and is suitable for welding a wide range of metals and alloys.

Applications: Widely used in aerospace, medical equipment, and demanding engineering projects, it is suitable for welding thin-walled materials and non-ferrous metals such as aluminum and magnesium.

4. Submerged Arc Welder (SAW)

Features: Submerged Arc Welders use a DC power supply to form an arc by burying the welding area in welding powder during the welding process. This method enables high-efficiency and deep penetration welding, with high weld quality and a stable welding process.

Applications: Commonly used in large-scale industrial applications such as shipbuilding, pressure vessels, and pipeline welding.

5. Pulse Arc Welder

Features: Pulse Arc Welders use pulsed current to control the welding process, which enables better temperature control and melting control during welding. This welding method is suitable for thinner materials and can reduce the heat-affected zone.

Application: Commonly used in precision welding and applications that require controlled welding temperature, such as automotive parts welding.

Different types of machines have their own characteristics and applicable scenarios. Choosing a suitable welding machine can not only improve welding efficiency, but also improve welding quality. According to specific welding requirements, material types and working environment, welders can choose the most suitable arc welding machine to ensure the success of welding work.
